Project Example
Orphaned Mine Water Reclamation Project
Background
This mine was previously mined for copper and zinc in the 1990’s. It has since been closed and requires water quality treatment of precipitation and runoff entering the open pit, which becomes acidic with high dissolved metals.
Approach
This site was small with no available electricity. Due to the remoteness and size of the site, a BNR unit was used. The BNR unit is able to treat water, with pulverized lime, directly in the chamber minimizing the amount of equipment required. Diesel was used for generators on-site and for the pumps, which are discharging the contaminated water into the BNR. In this case, the water is treated in-situ to meet water quality standards and is then decanted, through pumps, into the environment.
